Mathsson Pernilla Brings A Touch Of Scandinavia To The Living Room
Saturday, December 22nd, 2007 by    Subscribe To Our FeedThe large range of furniture (möbler) making styles range from simple, practical items such as furniture for the office or school house, up to the ornate and luxurious. There are certain styles which are synonomous with certain designers, or time periods from which they hail, or even the area from which they originate. Wood has been a mainstay material in furniture construction, and it has been used for utilitarian as well as artistic purposes, especially by Scandinavian craftsmen.
Bruno Mathsson was one of the great masters to design furniture in the Scandinavian style. Besides being a crafter of masterfully designed furniture, he was an accomplished architect. His most famous works were made during the thirties and forties and the designs are still produced today. Many imitations and fraudulent copies also exist.
The Pernilla 2 easy chair and Pernilla 3 lounge chair are two of Mathsson’s most widely known pieces. To design the most enjoyable furniture designs he sat in the snow and looked at the mold that his body made. He took this mold and designed his furniture with a natural body contour.
The Pernilla 2 easy chair is quite similar to the Pernilla 69. Both have lovely organic lines, optional padded armrests and pillow headrests. They provide luxurious comfort and ergonomically correct sitting positions. Sitting in one feels wonderful. When they are finished with soft leather they feel even more luxurious.
Once you have seen this wonder by Mathsson, you will not be surprised that the Pernilla 3 is known worldwide for the comfort that it brings. The lounger version of the Pernilla 2 looks great enough that you’ll just have to have one, like thousands of other people in Sweden and around the world. In addition, the Pernilla 3 comes with armrests and a pillow headrest for added comfort. To make it even cozier, you can have your Pernilla 3 covered with fine sheepskin from Australia.
During the lean war years of WWII Mathsson’s Pernilla chairs were actually made with different, unique materials, such woven paper or jute, for the webbing on the seat and back. The frames are constructed of bent wood, while the seating can have several finishes from woven webbing, to leather. The great thing about the Mathsson Pernilla line is its flexibility, it can be constructed from an array of materials, all the while maintaining its comfort because of the excellent ergonomics inherent in the design.
Pernilla chairs have a feminine sensibility to them, much like their name, with curves and bows. This design is not only noted for its organic lines, but has been given a description by some as ‘the most comfortable chair you could possibly sit in’. The Pernilla 2 and 69 designs are generally complemented by an ottoman of similar design, which gives them almost the same shape as the lounger Pernilla 3. Mathsson’s designs are known for their flexibility, and the pairing of the chair with an ottoman illustrates that love of flexibility from Mathsson.

The range of furniture styles is only limited by the creativity of designers. Bruno Mathsson was a very important designer in the 1930’s and 1940’s. To this day, his furniture designs (bruno mathsson möbler) are still highly sought after. Many people copy his style, some without permission. During the material shortages of WWII, Mathsson utilized several different materials in the creation of his chairs. What makes the Mathsson Pernilla chair line stand out is the variety of materials they are created from. The frames of the chairs are made of bentwood. There were a variety of materials used for the seating.
