I Think My Dog May Have Earmites
Sunday, December 30th, 2007 by    Subscribe To Our FeedEarmites make dogs and cats miserable. They feed on the epidermal waste. If you have dogs in your home, or if you take care of dogs, you should be aware of the possibility of these critters.
Most of the time they are large enough to be seen with the unaided eye. A magnifying glass will help you see them quite easily. You may notice that your dog is scratching his ears a lot, or acting different. Your dog could develop a serious yeast infection. This can happen if he scratches, but sometimes it happens even if he doesn’t.
A brownish discharge around your dog’s ears can alert you to these dog ear mites. What’s happening is that the mites are stimulating the production of ear wax. So if you’re seeing this, it may be time to give your dog a check up.
If you want to see for sure if your dog has ear mites, get a cotton swab and very gently wipe up some of the wax in your dog’s ear. Examine this wax under a magnifying glass and you can easily tell if there are mites living in your dog’s ear.
If you see that your dog has ear mites, it is very important to get him treated right away. Besides the fact that they can really make your dog positively miserable, they are very dangerous and can cause your dog’s ear drum to rupture and cause seizures and even death.
Also, be aware that they are very mobile as adults and can easily spread from one animal to another, and infest your other pets. Make sure that you check any other animals for signs of ear mites as well.
