Get Some Facts Regarding Antique Wood Furniture

Filed under: Furniture — Decor Guru @ 11:22 pm

There is a great variety of antique wood furniture at my grandparents house. Much of it is actually in very good shape although some of it shows its age.For as long as I can remember, this furniture has been around, and has weathered three children and ten grandchildren.

Because it was very well made and was meant to last, it’s stood up rather well. There are many things you can do to save it even though not all antique wood furniture this age look good. There are many people who are always looking for a great piece of antique wood furniture.

They scour shops and flea markets to get the piece they fall in love with. Even though I haven’t really had the inclination to do it myself just yet, I can see why this might be a lot of fun. The best deals are the ones you can find in flea markets, if you know anything about antique wood furniture, you can spot a bargain. What might look like a beat up old table might be worth much more than the seller ask for.

If you find a beat up piece of antiquewoodfurniture, you have two options. You can restore it yourself, or you can pay someone to do it for you. It’s a lot of work to do it yourself although it could be a lot of fun. I needed to remove three layers of paint on a old table that I loved once.

How to Buy that Rug with the Ideal Size

Filed under: Rugs — Decor Guru @ 11:57 am

The pattern, design and colors are the primary thoughts to cross a rug-shopper’s mind. The a href=”http://hubpages.com/hub/What-Size-Area-Rug-To-Choose” target=”_blank”> rug size, which can be a crucial factor is often set aside until you realize you bought one that’s too small or too large for your use.

In order to find one that’s right in size, be prepared for the battle of shopping. Beforehand, measure the room or area you intend to decorate. All you need are a tape measure and your writing materials to record the measurements. Expect NOT to find the exact same measures. If you did, great! If not, choose one that is closest and try not to get too hung-up about it. If you don’t find any of similar size at all, perhaps it’s time to re-consider your chosen area or the décor you should use. Adapt some flexibility and your carefree attitude might land you that perfect rug.

LAY OUT YOUR WORKSPACE

* Use “L” and “U” shaped desks for the most efficient workspaces;
* Store your gadgets and equipment — telephone, computer, etc. — on one “wing”;
* Leave the other wing free to spread out while you work;
* Have everything you need within arm’s reach;
* Place the telephone on the side of the desk opposite your writing hand. This way you can hold the telephone and take notes at the same time;
* Add a hutch for extra storage for books, supplies, and equipment; and
* Avoid cluttering your workspace by filing away personal items.

PUT ERGONOMICS TO WORK FOR YOU

* Pay particular attention to your body — aches and pains aren’t normal;
* Do not generally bend, squat, or stretch whilst at your workstation;
* Place your monitor at eye level — if not, raise your monitor;
* Place your wrists flat when typing or using the mouse. If not, use a keyboard tray or wrist rest when typing; and
* When sitting, your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Your calves need to be perpendicular to the floor with feet on the ground. If they are not, adjust your chair or use a footrest.

ORGANIZE YOUR SUPPLY STORAGE

* Do not hoard supplies at your desk;
* Keep only what you need right now at your workstation;
* Use a separate supply area for storing bulk amounts;
* Store away extras in labeled containers and group like items together for instance writing utensils, clips, notepads, etc.;
* Place flat items (paper, sheet protectors, and folders) in stacking trays;
* Place drawer dividers in drawers to keep small items in order;
* Place envelopes and note cards in a small vertical rack; and
* Use bracket shelves above your desk for additional storage.

Choosing Your Dream Home Plans

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 7:12 am

Now that you are ready to build your dream home, you need to shop around for the perfect home plans. The architectural design you choose should be functional and attractive based on your own preferences. Though the task may seem intimidating at first, picking home plans can also be fun.

Home Plans By Any Other Name

When you first start considering home plans, it gets confusing when they are called other names. Home plans may also be referred to as house plans, blueprints, floor plans and home designs. No matter what name you give them, home plans are the beginning position for building any house you want.

Begin With a Budget

Before you shop for home plans, know how much you want to spend. Determine the cost of land and the cost of building a house on the land. Realistically determine your annual salary. Tally up your current financial obligations. Avoid basing your decision on future income that you may never actually earn. You should be able to pay for the home plans you choose today, not five years down the road.

The Different Kinds of Home Plans

Once you know how much you can spend, you’re ready to shop for home blueprints. Online resources, building supply stores and the local library are great places to start. You can peruse thousands of possible home plans on the internet and in books to find the ones you like the most. Consider some of the basic types of home plans:

Bungalows - this 1 to 1.5 story home has been a popular choice for centuries. From vacationers to fishermen to small families to retirees, bungalows are efficient, cheap and attractive.

Cottages and Cabins - whether you want a vacation home or an affordable home residence, cottages and cabins are a charming choice. English cottages have old-fashioned style while modern cabins are rustic retreats. Modern log cabins look like their predecessors from centuries gone by but are much more durable and secure.

Ranches - ranch homes were originated in America during the 1920s. As suburbs were built during the 1950s to the1980s, ranch homes became increasing desirable due to their flexibility and affordable cost. Most ranch houses are a single story with a long, low profile.

Country homes - front porches, rolling lawns, dormers and simplistic designs define country homes. French country homes have a unique demand with delightful arched entry openings and steep hip roof lines.

Colonial homes - since the beginning of America, colonial homes have been a popular selection. Typical colonial homes have simple lines and quality craftsmanship with plenty of little luxuries. Colonial homes are known for their quaint living rooms.

Luxury homes - luxury home plans include all the services you dream of. Attached garages, a master bedroom suite, multiple bathrooms and a highly efficient kitchen are usually found in luxury homes.

Victorian homes - the gracious beauty of Victorian homes is often found in cities and villages throughout the United States. Victorian homes have multiple roofs, turrets and big bay windows. Highly decorated Victorian homes are typically referred to as gingerbread houses.

With so many different kinds of home blueprints to chose from, it’s easy to create a house that suits all your needs and desires. Use your imagination and an attentive builder to make your fantasy home become a reality.

Bedbugs:different Ways To Verify Bedbug Symptoms

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 7:12 am

When we were little children, our parents always told us to “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” This usually scared us enough to stay in bed and go to sleep;if we only had known what “bed bugs” really were, we would never of slept in our beds.

There had not been any reports of an infestation of “bedbugs” for over 50 years, until now. These sneaky unwanted little bugs go from spot to spot by jumping in your personal belongings. These insects live in places we would never expect. A large error in which travellers make is placing their suit cases down on the hotels bed or couch. Suppose there was an infestation on those items you will not carry these little bugs with you were ever you go which has now created an infestation.

Bedbugs can be very tiny, smaller than a pencil point, or rather large, about the size of an apple seed. The real issue isn’t their size but that the bugs like to hide out of the light and out of sight. They stay in their hiding places until late in the night when they emerge to find humans on which to feed.

The “bedbugs” shade will differ a modestly dependant on if they have previously eaten; normally, they are of a brownish tint. It is possible that some people may become more swollen around the bite, or might have more itching the other people do this all depends mainly on your reaction to the bite itself, no matter what you will notice some redness around the bite area.

What You Need To Know About Home Security

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 7:12 am

Most burglaries occur when a home is empty. This is why it is of most importance to secure your home before vacation. A burglary occurs every 15.4 seconds according to the FBI database. A large number of burglaries can be prevented by installing a home security system.

Installing a home security alarm and surveillance cameras will immediately make your home a safer place for your family and property. Home security alarms are also offered with home security monitoring. Nothing can completely guarantee the security of your home, but there are things you can do which will greatly enhance security. The most cost effective technique is to add motion sensing lighting all around the outside of your home. Many steps can also be taken inside the house to improve security. Go over all the locks on windows and doors and make sure that they work properly. Anyone can find themselves the target of burglars, so don’t think that it will never happen to you.

Glass sliding doors on your patio or porch are just what a burglar needs for easy access. Secure your door; install a blocking device, like a “Charlie bar” or something similar. This will prevent the door from sliding open easily. At least block the track with something heavy, like a steel rod or wooden pole; this will keep it from being moved easily.

Where possible use a home safe to store any valuables including such items as keys to outbuildings, garages, vehicles and any other item that requires a key. You should also hide any personal documents and identity information in your home safe as well. If you don’t have a home safe consider using a safety deposit vault especially if you live in a high crime area.

The easiest way to prevent a burglar from choosing your house as his target is to make it look like someone is at home. It is easy, inexpensive and effective to use timers to turn lights and appliances off and on at random times of the day. Make sure you spread the effect over several rooms of the house.

Another important measure is to stop mail and newspaper deliveries. It also helps to leave a vehicle parked in the driveway. Whether it is yours or a neighbor’s doesn’t matter. You should ask a neighbor or relative to check on the house once in a while and give them a key. Don’t alter your answering machine message to indicate that you are on vacation.

Homeowners are never one hundred percent safe when it comes to home intrusions etc. One important measure that can be taken to reduce the probability of a burglary is to make sure any tools that could assist with home intrusion are put away safely, and any outbuildings are locked and secured to prevent access.

One of the easiest and effective courses of action that instantly boosts the security of your home and family is to install a home security alarm and Home Security Cameras. A large number of these burglaries could be prevented by installing a Home Security System.

Do-It-Yourself Metal Roofing Installation

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 7:12 am

If you find the idea of metal roofing for your house appealing, you will also see that it is quite a versatile choice. When buying the materials, you may notice that the DIY (do-it-yourself) cost for metal roofing is much less expensive than hiring a professional roofing contractor. You will find the cost for the installation will be much more economical if you do it yourself.

The metals commonly utilized during roof construction in the past easily absorbed heat from the sun; this made the interior of the building warmer and caused the cost of cooling to rise. Modern metal roofing materials control solar reflectance and thermal emittance which are the two main culprits contributing to heat build up due to the sun’s rays.

Doing the work of installing a metal roof yourself is an option you can choose if you feel you have the tools and construction knowledge you will need. One fact you should know when you think of DIY metal roofing prices is the durability of your roof. Studies show that whether painted or unpainted metal roofing lasts from 35 to 50 years. When you are dealing with an existing roof that is of a non-metal construction you need to check to see if the old roof had been leaking.

More aged wooden roofing material can experience rotting from water leaks. Should that happen, all rotting wood will have to be taken off and replaced with new metal roof material. Failure to replace the damaged wooden material under the new roof will result in problems and extra costs in the future.

Ultra Seam standing seam metal roofs and siding products provide an ideal architectural solution for almost any type of structure. Ultra Seam products utilize state of the art continuous panel length technology to provide the perfect blend of function and aesthetics at competitive prices. With fifteen manufacturing facilities nationwide, Ultra Seam products are readily available to meet your demanding construction schedule.

The metal panels overlap and lock together in a secure fashion. Metal panel materials are ordered by the piece for standing seam roofing installations. This results in less money being wasted due to ordering too much material. Another plus is, once the old roof has been checked for damage, the new roof can be installed directly on top of it.

The very newest metal roofing technology supplies a metal alloy of aluminum and zinc which stunts rusting or oxidation. Whichever metal you decide to use, it is imperative you pick one that has a protective coating and has a great warranty. It should be spark and fire resistant, and it should reflect the sun’s hot rays away from your structure. These elements will definitely save you money, as well as time, in the long run.

Today’s metal roofing technology enables you to control solar reflectance and thermal emittance, the two primary causes of heat building up from the sun’s radiation. Studies show that whether painted or unpainted metal roofing lasts from 35 to 50 years.

Discovering The Top Used Desk For Your Office Furniture Solution

Filed under: Furniture — Decor Guru @ 10:17 pm

Most of us would love to have attractive tables, chairs, sofas, lamps, and other appealing furniture in our homes. When it comes to home office furniture, though, can you find nice options without spending a fortune? Yes - in fact, you might be surprise at what’s available in the used furniture market.

Buying a used office desk as part of your overall office furniture set won’t just save you money - it could also help care for the planet. Refurbishing and refinishing is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. So, keep reading for some great ideas on where you can find a cool, “new” desk.

Recycled Work Bench

A refurbished shop or tool table can add an instant industrial classic look to your workspace while also providing a sturdy and properly sized work surface. Most worktables are adjustable in height, allowing you to bring your work surface to an ergonomically correct position.

You can further play on that industrial look by installing a tool peg board or brushed metal magnet board above your desk. Use this space to post notes, hang paperwork or keep your everyday office supplies.

Recycled Architecture Table

What makes drafting and architecture tables so great is that they’re the original adjustable desk. They’re also designed for heavy-duty work environments, so that means they’re sturdy and able to stand up under a lot of pressure. The ability to adjust an architecture table from a low seating to a high standing position means you can have an ergonomically correct desk, but for a fraction of the price.

Being able to adjust the height of your used office desk is a fantastic feature for two reasons - you can bring the desk to an ergonomically correct height, but you can also spend part of your workday standing. Standing at your desk forces you to retain good posture and avoids hunching. It also burns more calories than sitting in a task chair all day.

Unearthing an Antique

Scour your local garage sales and flea markets to find a beautiful antique desk, but be prepared to adjust the height. Most antique desks are significantly smaller and shorter than modern desks and aren’t designed to be paired with larger office chairs.

The best way to increase your desk height by a few inches is using inexpensive refrigerator and appliance levelers. They’re essentially metal pegs that screw into the bottom of your desk legs, allowing you to adjust the height and even level the desk.

Locating Modern Used Desks

If you’re seeking a used office desk but would prefer something more modern than an antique or old drafting table, the best place to start is in your local classified ads or charity and consignment shops. The website at Craigslist offers local web classifieds for most cities in North America and a large number of listings for used furniture in your area. For consignment and charity shops in your area, try Google Map’s Business Search function.
