Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 11:35 am

Those with a penchant for everything African and who can’t get there for a visit have the option of bringing Africa right into their own homes.

The use of African decor as a means of adding an exotic touch to one’s home seems to be creating plenty of interest. There is more than one forum online dedicated to African safaris and yes, African decor as well.

So what are we talking about? Well, in a nutshell, take a room in your house or, take the whole house and give it some exotic flair. That’s right, give it a touch of African safari! Decor can be anything from ornaments to tools to souvenir weapons such as spears but for decoration purposes only.

Give The Kids A Project

School holiday time can present parents with plenty of challenges especially if they are not heading away during the holidays. When the kids are home finding things for them to do can be a task in itself.

What about a project such as transforming a part of the home into an African safari setting? This could even be an area outside. One of the popular ways parents are helping their kids is to help them decorate their bedrooms with a safari theme.

So where do you start? Well, how about turning a wall into a mural. African animals, a jungle setting or make your own vines from materials bought down at the local Dollar General.

There are any number of ideas. How about traveling to some of the yard sales near your home and looking for toys of African wildlife. Visit the local charity store and see what’s available.

Get hold of some netting and use it as a hummock or hang it from the ceiling and cover it with African decor. Put a couple of safari style hats in the room to give it more of an African feel. Ask your kids for ideas as well. They could do some research online and simply search for all things African decor.

The possibilities are endless and best of all, you’re kids will be doing something creative.

It seems a trip to the mighty continent of Africa may be a far-flung dream for many but there is nothing stopping you from decorating your home African-style.

Anything from ornaments and artifacts to creating a jungle appearance are some of the popular forms of decoration people are turning to. But it seems children are the most enthusiastic about African safari creations within the home.

Decorating With African Decor

Yes, you could head to the nearest exotic shop and buy safari decoration but if you are on a budget, then this cost could become rather prohibitive.

Let’s take a look a few ideas to turn your son’s or daughter’s room into a safari setting.

6 African Décor Decoration Tips

- For the effect of vines, material such as braided twine is relatively inexpensive and by heading down to your nearest dollar store, you can pick up either green paper or garland and create a leafy look. Simply hang your vines from the ceiling.

- For animal effect, head down to your nearest charity store and pick up toys which would match an African setting. Lions, monkeys giraffes - as long as they are native to Africa. Yard sales are another great place to pick up old toys on the cheap.

- Bamboo and palm plants are excellent for creating a more realistic jungle effect.

- Transform a layer of netting into a hummock and put it in a corner of the room.

- African ornaments such as drums, spears and shields may take a little finding at the right price but can only give the room more Africa-style flavor. This is true safari decoration and worth looking for.

- Cut out animal pictures from books and paste them around the room. Use animal covered wrapping paper to decorate further and use a safari hat and a pair of binoculars for further effect.

Ideas On Basement Finishing

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 5:06 pm

Why finish a basement? Some might think that the work involved is not worth the payoff. But for many, the monetary payout is well overshadowed by the change of limited storage square footage to comfortable, useable, livable square footage. The transformation that can happen is amazing. Who wouldn’t want to increase the value of their home and possibly double their living space?

There are as many different ways a basement can be finished as there are people finishing them. Mother-in-law apartments, nurseries, home theaters, teenager hangout, home offices and even just an extra family room are all examples of different types of basement finishing ideas that could be used.

Of course, these are the mundane types. Truly, the only limits are size of pocketbook and space. How about a permanent haunted house? An exotic “Arabian Nights” tent? A train-lover’s oasis? A nightclub? Do any of these sound appealing? Just because the basement is being finished, does mean it has to be boring.

Basement finishing ideas can also be found at your local hardware store. There are professionals that can help you decided what would work best with the space in your home and what materials would best be used. Since basements are below grade, there are some materials that should not be used, or used with caution, depending on what type of climate there is.

By finishing the basement, not only does it increase the size of your home and give value extra living space, it also saves money. How? By basement finishing walls and floor, they are insulated, which will keep the house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and all cost less while doing so. So, while it is expensive to do so, finishing the basement will payoff in the long run in reduced heating/cooling bills and increase the value of your home.

Something to keep in mind about the value increase, it is not a dollar for dollar increase. Unlike kitchens and baths that almost all the money spent is recouped in value increase, basements are not as valuable. So keep that in mind. Just because you spend $40,000 finishing your basement, doesn’t mean you will get the $40,000 back in increased value. The amount of return is subjective to your housing market and neighborhood. So do your homework beforehand.

As you can see, basement finishing ideas are as myriad as the world is. Just make sure you have a clear plan, a good budget and a realistic idea of what the whole process entails. If you do so, enjoy the new living space and increased home value you have just engendered. You deserve it.

Bathroom Refurbishing With Kohler Plumbing Fixtures

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 11:01 pm

So you’re thinking about updating your old bathroom. Good idea. Your new bathroom will make your whole place feel more modern and refreshed. But first you need to get some important decisions right.

Firstly, will you remodel your bathroom completely, from top to bottom, or will you just touch up the place with some new stylish fittings and fixtures? A complete overhaul is a tempting choice when it comes to bathrooms. That’s the way to get the place exactly the way you want it right? Contemporary and crisp, with the latest designs. Now there are obviously a few other factors to consider before making the decision, such as the time and budget available to you, which also depends on how much you will outsource to contractors.

Changing the basic layout of the room will inevitably mean more work and higher costs - especially when it comes to moving stuff that require plumbing, like the tub and the toilet. Layout changes may be inspirational, but are likely to be expensive. But you can get a great boost just by changing the “biggies” - i.e. getting a new bath tub or shower. Wanna get some inspiration in your hunt for a stylish new tub? Check out this huge range of gorgeous Kohler bathtubs.

The challenge is always to make your budget (and time) to work with your level of ambition. Sometimes the ambitions are bigger than the budget - but if you decide to go for a big one, just make sure that the planning is thorough from start to finish. Larger projects sometimes have a tendency to veer towards budget and schedule overruns.

The next decision is to decide how much you will do yourself and what you need a contractor for. This all depends on your experience with DYI. Keep in mind that bathrooms are notoriously difficult for the beginner. Many tasks are best left to professionals. Not many people are part time experts in both plumbing, tiling, demolition work and interior design. Select the tasks you know and enjoy - and leave the difficult or boring parts to professionals.

Also, verify if there are any local permits and licenses required before getting started.

Your new bathroom should be both stylish and functional. Don’t fall for the temptation to forget functionality just because you got seduced by style. Your dream bathroom will not only look good but also be pefectly suited for the intended purpose. So keep both style and function in mind when deciding about layout, materials, fittings, fixtures etc. As in any major project, preparation is key.

Quality is key when selecting bathroom materials. If you want to be sure to get top quality bathroom and plumbing fixtures that are stylish as well, use Kohler bathroom fittings. There are many different designs available in the range and these Kohler bathroom sinks may give you an idea of the cool styles available for your bathroom.

Enjoy your new bathroom - and good luck with the remodeling project.

Hot Tub Enclosures | Add Beauty And Functionality To Your Hot Tub Or Home Spa

Filed under: Outdoor — Decor Guru @ 5:08 am

Owning a hot tub is a very pleasant experience, but sometimes the weather doesn’t co-operate. That’s usually when a person begins to thing about hot tub enclosures that add to the beauty and functionality of the hot tub or home spa. After all, when you invest in a hot tub, you want to be able to use it as much as possible.

Another real advantage for hot tub enclosures is privacy. Many people feel self-conscious about being in hot tubs in little or no clothing and are much happier and more contented with screening or walls. If there is little privacy in your yard due to the type of fencing, an enclosure can make your tub much more intimate and pleasurable.

Hot tub enclosures can be purchased as a package with the tub, be bought separately, or custom made to match your landscaping and home style. Enclosures can be some simple screens, designs like small cabins or chalets or gazebo style and more open. It is all a matter of taste and budget.

An enclosure can be more expensive than the hot tub itself, so it may be a fairly major purchase. Custom built enclosures are usually pretty pricey unless you do it yourself. Fortunately there are dozens and dozens of ideas and plans for enclosures on the internet and in project magazines and books. Your public library also likely has books on the topic.

Browsing books and websites for ideas before you buy or decide to build is a good idea. There are so many different types and price levels that you may not purchase wisely if you just walk into a dealer or contractor and have not compared prices. Getting an idea of what is out there and price ranges makes shopping easier.

Some of what things you put into your hot tub enclosures and what kind you choose is dependent in part on your climate. If you live where winters are mild, a simple enclosure may need no other heat than the hot tub itself. However, in cold climates, it may be necessary to warm the air with a heater as well. Some people even air condition enclosures in very hot climates for comfortable summer usage.

Ideas On Basement Bars

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 11:11 pm

If you have a finished basement or one that needs to be built in, you have an ideal spot for a home bar. For wine lovers, a basement is an ideal spot for cellaring great wines or for installing a cooler or wine vault. In fact, basement bars can be entertainment centers for the whole family.

There are many kinds of basement bars from the very simple to the extremely elaborate. You can simply install a countertop for a “dry” bar or you can install plumbing and even beer or soda taps. Some home bars have complete miniature kitchens and extras such as icemakers.

If your basement is already finished, your main decision is whether or not to have plumbing. If it is at all possible to put in a sink, you should do so since this makes the bar so much more functional and easier to use. If you have the space and money, it would be nice to install a basement half bath for convenience.

Basement bars can be purchased prefabricated in many designs, can be custom ordered in many styles or can be built in to exact specifications. Almost any style can be accommodated from a tiki hut look to a full blown English country pub. Doing part of the work yourself can also really help the budget.

An important part of any bar is the selection of bar stools. These also come in a terrific range of styles and pricing from simple stools for only $20 or so to fancy ones that reach four figures. Be sure you pick stools that are comfortable to sit on, not just nice to look at. Also consider durability since they will likely get lots of use.

While you can stock all sorts of liquors, beers, and wines, many basement bars are alcohol free family affairs. These can be a safe gathering place for the kids and very popular for parties and casual get-togethers. You will likely want a microwave for snacks or popcorn or even a popcorn machine. Kids love these and they aren’t terribly costly.

A basement can be a meeting room, party room and family room by adding a simple or more ambitious bar counter and seating. Basements also tend to be more sound isolated so partying won’t disturb nearby neighbors as much as a ground level party would. Take a second look at your underused basement space and picture a fun and inviting bar there.

Ready To Redesign Your Basement?

The basement finishing system is a system of high quality, highly insulated wall panels that are installed by professionals. These panels are insulated, moisture resistant, mold and mildew resistant and easily removable for access to foundation walls if needed for repair of electrical and plumbing fixtures. This system has been tested for flammability, performance stability, acoustical, and thermal properties.

The Owens Corning system is one of the easiest ways to finish a basement, and on average, finishing a whole basement can be started and completed in two weeks using this system. Basements are notorious for moisture. Common basement finish materials are drywall and wood, even though these materials are easily damaged by water. Mold and mildew can grow in these materials when moisture accumulates over time. Upper respiratory health is affected negatively by exposure to mold and mildew.

While the system is moisture resistant, it cannot be used as a moisture barrier for your home. If you have existing water problems they need to be treated prior to installation of this system. Under normal circumstances these panels are able to accommodate high humidity which makes them an excellent choice for basement finishing materials.

An Owens Corning basement finishing system is made of mold and mildew resistant materials. This system not only creates beautifully finished walls, it puts a mold and mildew barrier up for the safety of you and your family. In addition to the mold and mildew resistant features, this basement finishing system also has acoustic properties and flame resistant properties.

When rooms in your basement sound like you are talking in a cave it makes it difficult to enjoy your favorite television program or to work out in your basement gym. The Owens Corning basement finishing system panels are made up of an acoustic insulation that provides 75% sound absorption. The acoustic abilities allow you to enjoy the sound system in your basement home theater.

This system not only insulates acoustically. Thermal insulation is also provided which can create a more energy efficient home. In fact in some areas installing this basement finishing system can actually make you eligible for energy tax credits.

The system is made up of several panels that are fitted easily into a system of rails, and includes the moldings, rails and the panels. Ceiling finishing is not included in the system, although in some areas the certified installers may be able to assist in ceiling finishing as well.

This system can save you money on construction in the long run. When the basement finishing system has been installed it is easy to remove single panels when needed. This is important as it allows homeowners to check their foundation and do any repairs needed to pipes and/or wiring at their convenience. If you do need to get to the foundation for any reason, all that is required is the simple removal of one panel. Once you are finished with whatever repair or inspection work you were doing the panel is simply snapped back into place.

Hampton Bay Patio Furniture Adds Quality And Value

Filed under: Outdoor — Decor Guru @ 11:07 pm

Hampton Bay is a home decor line that prides itself on combining innovative designs with quality craftsmanship, and doing so at affordable prices. Hampton Bay products are sold exclusively through a small number of retailers, and are manufactured by a company headquartered in California. The Hampton Bay line produces three types of products: ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, and outdoor furniture, which is sold as Hampton Bay patio furniture.

The Hampton Bay patio furniture line is constructed with rugged materials that are meant to survive years of outdoor conditions. They use aluminum alloy frames that are finished with a chip-resistant powder coat. Because aluminum does not rust, and the powder coat protects against other forms of damage and corrosion, you can expect years of good looks and function.

Polymer components are made from PVC materials that are treated with UV inhibitors. Over time, sunlight can break down the compounds in plastics and other polymers, causing cracking or even crumbling of parts. These inhibitors protect Hampton Bay patio furniture against such damage. Hampton Bay also uses natural materials that are highly weather resistant, such as teak, as well as beautifully convincing faux materials, such as resin-based rattan.

When purchasing Hampton Bay patio furniture, you will have a wide assortment to choose from. All outdoor furniture components are featured, including bars and umbrella tables, bar stools, benches and chairs, and chaise lounges. Outdoor architectural and decorative components, such as gazebos, screens, and planter, are also available.

These items come in powder-finished aluminum, teak, wicker, rattan, and resin polymers, providing you with a variety of colors, textures, and styles. You will find that you can find the look that fits your home, whatever your tastes may be. And because they have such a wide variety of components, you can create an entire outdoor living space using one particular style and set of materials, or combine designs and materials for interesting accents and contrast.

Looking For Antique Beds? Search Online For Sculpture Artifacts

Filed under: Furniture — Decor Guru @ 5:00 pm

I was utterly speechless as I walked into the store of Antique Jewelry Chicago. I was assigned a PowerPoint on different types of Architectural Artifacts to present to my class, so my mother suggested to me to go to an authentic store to learn information for my assignment . When I went to the library I didn’t find what I was looking for, so when I went to this Antique Art Chicago store, I purchased a camera to take pictures of all of the Antique Chairs. I really got some great pictures . One photograph was a statue of a man holding a golden apple; I assume it was thought as a Architectural Artifacts. That must be a unique feature in Greek mythology. As I looked around the tiny but packed room, colors were soaring all around me, and when I would rotate left, something on the right would divert me. I didn’t know where to turn or where to start looking, because everything was purely beautiful and I appreciated all of the paintings I saw. Soon afterwards the only things I saw was the blinding flashes of my camera. I saved all of the pictures I took onto the laptop computer, and from there I put it on my PowerPoint. My class loved my assignment when it was shown to the class , and even better, my instructor gave me an A+ for effort, artistic quality , Antique Beds, and presentation. That was the most fun assignment I have ever participated in for school!
One morning I was leisurely walking down the streets, just walking aimlessly and taking in all the fresh air and the attractions of that beautiful day. While I was not very far away from my own home, a sign attracted my attention from across the street. It was big and red, and if that was not what attracted my attention, the actual name of the store sure did. It was called, “All Amazing and Astounding Antique Art Chicago.” The only thing that I could think of then was ‘great use of alliteration!’ Wow. I had no choice but to cross the road and stroll in; at least look around a tad . When I walked into the store I was really astonished. The Antique Chairs there was a sight to behold, everything was beautiful and captivating. Thoughts spinning around my head were ‘my husband is going to be so mad at me; he is not going to appreciate it.’ I mean, clearly , which husband would enjoy their wife spending literally thousands of dollars just to acquire Architectural Artifacts and Antique Chairs? That was exactly what I did, and in the end of our quarrel I convinced my husband that he too has things to gain out of my procurement . After all, doesn’t everybody need some place to eat and places to sit? My motto has always been, “out with the old and in with the new.”
Every year in the fall time there is an art demonstration. I am not really talented in anything that has to do with art, but what I am talented in is looking and shopping. I love going to those shows! In three days is the Antique Art Chicago show and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I even skipped school for that, and when the day came I made sure to dress warmly because it was a chilly day outside, and I definitely made sure to carry lots of money. So I was walking down the road that was blocked off for the show, and something sparkly attracted my eye. I walked over to the stand and there was an old woman there selling Architectural Artifacts. There was a gorgeous rock there called cadmium, and when I glanced at the tag for it something clicked in my memory. I remember learning about that stone in school, it was golden and it was a kind of metal used as ink for tattooing. I also made an impulse purchase of Antique Chairs I bought it to show my illustrator the next day, because I literally couldn’t keep my eyes of it and I knew that my instructor would give me extra credit for bringing it in. I could constantly use that!
