Plumbing a Basement in Clay Soil

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 4:25 pm

Clay soil basement construction poses several problems. Expansive soil can cause cracking in the foundation, basement walls and floor if proper precautions aren’t taken. Natural movement caused by expansive clay soils also require special precautions to be taken when installing basement plumbing. Pipes can burst if plumbing is too rigid.

Basement makeovers dont have to be difficult, but you do need to keep a few things in mind before you start work.

Floating walls keep the walls and floors from being damaged as the home moves with the expansion of clay soil. This allows the walls to move independently from the floor of the basement. The pipes need to be able to move upward with the floor but not push against the first floor of your home. The drainage pipes under the basement floor need to be able to breathe as well.

When you install bathrooms, laundry room, or a mudroom in the basement you need to allow for natural movement of clay soil. Installing flexible expansion couplings and expansion joints on basement plumbing will allow for this movement and keep the pipes from leaking at the joints or cracking.

Your pipes should ideally be new during installation. If you are working with pre-existing pipes make sure not to go from one type of metal to another. If you are using copper stay with copper pipes and the same goes for other metals. Take care to not to change the size of pipes accidentally. It is possible to go from one size to another but it is not always usually wise idea. You should also start with new pipes whenever possible. Older pipes can have lead solder break up while you are working with them and you do not want this to get into your water supply, even if it is for a shower and not drinking water.

Anywhere that you are attaching one length of pipe to another you need to add an expansion coupling. Expansion couplings are made of a synthetic polymer sleeve that slips over the ends of both pipes. Steel clamps are used to hold the coupling and pipes together. Once applied, the coupling will allow for a small amount of movement in the pipes. It is important to make sure you have the expansion couplings and not regular couplings as the expansion couplings are made to breathe with the home and the regular couplings aren’t made to move.

When installing a shower you can use reverse floating walls to stabilize pipes in the basement and allow movement in the top of the pipes. You should put as much of the plumbing in the same area as possible and use the same wet wall. A chase should be included and access can be either along a wall or in the ceiling.

Flex lines are needed for water supply lines. The main water supply line should go into the chase and have flex lines attached in that area to the pipes used in the basement. The most logical place for the chase access panel is in the utility room along with the hot water heater.

As well as having expansion joints and flexible couplings installed the pipes there should be enough space between the pipes and the ceiling/floor to keep from having the pipes push into the ceiling as the ground expands with the changes in the moisture in clay soil.

Expansion joints will be needed for installation of ground water drainage pipes also. This can be done below the basement floor, above the foundation. Drains can be placed in the basement floor allowing moisture that does enter the basement to run into the drainage system and away from the home.

Bamboo Sheets - Time To Join The Bamboo Bedding Revolution!

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 2:18 pm

The popularity of bamboo continues to gain momentum as the message of creating a cleaner and safer environment echoes from media sources almost on a daily basis.

Bamboo sheets are fast becoming a first choice bedding accessory for many as the word spreads about their efficiency and versatility during both winter and summer months.

The use of bamboo sheets is no surprise considering the sturdy product is being used in many facets of our day-to-day living.

From wood flooring to window shades; from fencing to cooking and even for transport, bamboo has firmly established itself as a serious product resource which has put big smiles on the faces of those continually spreading the greener message.

The use of bamboo sheets is being widely accepted in the western world and after some initial hiccups, the product is proving a first rate alternative to the more traditional materials used in our bedding products.

The Benefits

Some of the benefits of bamboo sheets include:

- It’s a very soft fabric; some liken it to silk.

- Has the ability to adapt in both winter and summer. For Example, many report positively it will keep you cool in summer yet also keeps you warm during the colder months of winter.

- Very affordable. Bamboo sheet sets start as low as $30.

- Has definite environmental aspects simply because bamboo is a quickly renewable resource.

Fraying Edges?

Bamboo sheets are easy to maintain. The problem of fraying edges will probably occur over time and this could be said of most material fabric. However, by washing in a delicate wash cycle, you should prevent this from occurring.

Another quality associated with bamboo sheets is their ability to resist antibacterial infestation. It’s a natural quality of bamboo. The bed bugs won’t be biting according to several tests which have been conducted regarding bamboo.

If you’ve resisted the temptation to give bamboo sheets a try, the movement towards their use continues to grow. Might be time to consider your alternatives and contribute to the green movement in your special way.

Wall Art - Add Some Pizzaz To You Walls

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 1:10 am

Wall art is one of the features that makes a house into a home. You spend much of your time in your home, so it should show your style and your tastes. The way you decorate and furnish the house can make the difference between shelter and a warm, inviting home.

When most people hear someone walking about the term wall art, they automatically assume that the person is referring to paintings. But wall art is more than that - it can be rugs, sculptures, or even stained glass. You already know that the way lighting, furnishings, and decor interact contributes to the way your home looks and feels, but if you want to make your home truly “yours,” there’s no better accent than wall art.

A great way to brighten a room is to use a floral painting. Adding natural beauty to your room with paintings of flowers is becoming more popular and affordable. There are great varieties of color and style to compliment your home. Explore art painting to enhance the look of your home and add a personal touch.

Flower paintings can be made directly on the wall, or on the more traditional framed canvas. Decorating your home with paintings of flowers can be done in a number of ways, none of them wrong. Many will go with the traditional painting, or a reproduction of a classic. With this style you are freely able to move the painting from one room to another with little hassle.

Murals can be seen as a sign of luxury and beauty if done well. These paintings are usually a little more permanent and done by commission. A mural is typically found in homes that have one room with a grand wall space or in custom built homes as requested by the owners.

Want to perk up your home with a little character and style? Check out the many varieties of wall art available. There’s bound to be paintings, sculptures, or other wall art items that will appeal to your taste in art and which will be welcome additions to your home.

Wall art is the design element that defines your house, reflecting your own personal style that makes the space truly your own. Don’t just think of paintings for this role. Rugs, stained glass, pretty much anything can be hung on your walls. Creatively combining wall mounted art with other decor elements will give an environment that is uniquely yours. Floral paintings can brighten any wall and bring disparate elements into harmony. This effect can be achieved with the traditional approach of hanging paintings of flowers in the room. If you want a custom look, consider commissioning an artist to paint a mural of flowers on the wall.

Tired of being unorganized in your scrapbooking?

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 1:10 am

We all love to scrapbook, but as time goes on we collect more and more supplies and don’t have a place to put them. Well now is the time to get your scrapbooking organized by making your own scrapbooking organizer.

Soon you will be able to keep all those fun supplies and materials in one place.

What you will need:

- A nice shelf you can clear out just for your scrapbooking space. If you don’t already have a shelf, you can pick one up at any office supply store.

- Four or five paper racks. These are the racks that you can put your documents in without folding them.

- Several medium sized bins or baskets that will fit perfectly on your shelf. (You should be able to find these at any home design store, or office supplies store.)

- Polaroid camera.

- Permanent markers.

- Some freezer bags to keep the beads, stickers and other supplies in.

- Hot glue gun.

How to set it up:

1. To begin you want to find the perfect spot for your scrapbooking shelf. Some great ideas are your home office, the basement, (providing that it’s waterproofed and not damp or wet) or your storage room.

2. Set up your shelf in it’s designated area, then get all of your other supplies ready in a good working location. Be sure to have your scrapbooking supplies available as well.

3. Label each bin for the types of materials it will hold. For example, if you have 5 bins, use one for markers, pens, glue sticks, crayons, paints, and stamps. Include other things that are along these lines. You can use more bins for stencils, paper, templates and the like.

The last bin can be used for miscellaneous supplies that don’t fit into the other categories.

4. Now it is time to put every scrapbook supply in its matching bin. Use the Polaroid camera to take a picture of the supplies. Use the hot glue gun to glue the picture to the font of the bins. This a nice way to make a photo label. If you don’t have a camera, you can always just make a label out of markers.

5. Gather your different papers and place them in the scrapbooking organizer paper racks. That way you will always have the right paper when you need it.

6. Now, place your scrapbooking organizer bins and paper racks on your shelf where you wish them to be. Voila!

Get some supplies to organize in your bins from Discount Scrapbooking. They have discounts on everything from scrapbook embellishments to scrapbook stickers.

Alarm Systems Can Protect Your Family

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 1:10 am

We all want to feel secure in our own homes, and installing alarm systems allows us to experience that feeling of safety. These alarms go off to warn homeowners that there has been an unauthorized entry into their home, and usually make loud noises to repel the intruder and/or notify the police that a break-in has occurred.

Increases in home break-ins in recent years have convinced thousands of homeowners to purchase security systems to protect their homes. Even if you don’t have much to steal, burglars don’t know this and may pay you a visit anyway. If they do, it will be too late to protect yourself and your home.

Some break-ins end disastrously, even if nothing ends up being taken. A thief may become scared and nervous, and use a weapon to threaten home owners or worse. Being in a dangerous situation such as this can be avoided with alarm systems. Alarm systems cause burglars to run when sounded. They know that the police will be warned and that they will be caught if there is an alarm.

A wide variety of alert notification systems are available on the market. Consider the size of your dwelling, whether you require one of the more elaborate alarm systems, and what types of alerts you need. Some systems flash and emit a harsh noise, and others have recorded or synthesized voices ordering the intruder away.

If someone has been burglarized in the past, he is more likely to install an alarm system to ensure that it does not happen again. Determination to stop burglaries and other criminals tends to increase with experience. It is always a frightening experience to be robbed. Security companies offer their goods and services to the public to ensure that it doesn’t happen to their customers.

Alarm systems are a smart choice for any type of family, but particularly those with young children at home. Children are the most defenseless victims in the event of a home invasion and are most at risk if it happens. Home alarms aren’t just to protect your belongings. Security systems exist to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Ideas For Kitchen Remodeling

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 2:33 pm

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to stop its various gurgles and noises so you can have that all important cup of early morning coffee. Idly you glance about your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint on the corner of the door. It had been there for years but you never really took notice of it until now. Your gaze continues to wander and your eye gets caught by a patch of mildew seeping in just under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown color that your ceiling has turned just above where the cooker sits. The paint is faintly off color, and the lone wallpapered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now ready coffee and decide that a little bit of kitchen remodeling is needed.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get into it? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the little bits and pieces of decay that you were quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to get started on your little kitchen decorating project. That however is where the crunch comes in. Just how little do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with slapping a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the lengths of stripping the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out where that mildew stain might be headed.

Naturally enough it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you’ll probably do better in the long run to get rid of all your problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you’re fully “kitchen decorating” however then you’ll also need that all important coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains that you sewed yourself when you had nothing better to do. They’re also probably looking distinctly ratty by now. So go ahead and splurge on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains, and while you’re at it you might want to think of investing in a new set of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you’re finally done and can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen you can remember the Saturday morning that started it all. You’ll have no regrets however, since your kitchen decorating plan has landed you with a better kitchen than you ever expected. A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying your efforts and labor of love.

Using Electronic Air Cleaners To Help Control Indoor Air Pollution In The Home Or Office

Filed under: Home Ideas — Decor Guru @ 11:16 pm

The following extract is from a series of home articles and tips on air cleaners

Indoor air pollution is a problem that is a much more widespread health issue than most people are aware of and it should not be taken lightly, since most people spend ninety per cent of their time indoors. In order to improve energy efficiency, homes are tightly sealed against the elements, but this traps contaminants and toxins in the air. The best way to eliminate those pollutants is with air purifiers.

The most significant impact that indoor air pollution has on health is easily observed in the steep climb of incidences of asthma and allergies sufferers. Interestingly, this marked increase in respiratory problems is being observed in developed countries around the world. In addition to allergens being trapped in homes by better seals on windows and doors, it is also believed that the chemicals used in our homes for every day cleaning and maintenance also play a significant part. These chemicals build up over time, eventually reaching toxic levels when the air indoors is stagnant and not cleaned.

Both home and office environments are ripe for developing significant air quality problems, and for the same reasons. High quality air cleaners can be used in both homes and offices to decrease the amount of particulate contamination in the air, significantly improving air quality. Polluted air that is taken in regularly can cause many respiratory problems, including asthma and has recently been linked to the rising incidence of lung cancer.

Another area where home air cleaners should always be in use, are in hair and nail salons. Nail salon technicians and cosmetologists are at higher risks of developing breathing problems and lung disease because they are constantly exposed to higher than standard levels of potent chemicals, such as formaldehyde. This fact alone makes them 1.8 times more likely to end up with lung cancer because of this exposure. Proper air purification in their environments can help to reduce that risk.

Air purifiers are able to remove allergens and contaminants from the air. They significantly decrease the main contaminants found in home interiors, like dust, pollen, mold spores, dust mite feces and pet dander, just to name a few. They can also be helpful in eliminating smoke particles from the air as well. When the level of such pollutants is reduced, so is the risk of triggering allergies, developing asthma or contracting cancer.

A side benefit of regular use of air purifiers in the home is that they can also help to lower the frequency of dusting and vacuuming, since the particles are removed by the air purifier rather than settling on furniture and the floor.

There is a wide range of home air cleaners available on the market. Prices range from under $100 for a very basic unit that can effectively clean the air in a small room, to sophisticated home air purification systems that can cost several thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the house and the level of purification desired.

Most air purifiers are very energy efficient, making them affordable to run on a continuous basis. When choosing an air purification system, be sure to consider not only the price of the unit and the electrical usage in comparing costs, but also check the cost of the filters and the recommended frequency of air filter replacement.

All About Knife Care

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 2:10 am

I’m not completely sure, but I believe that the first cooking implement created by man was the knife. Ages ago, man used knives to hunt and gather their food, and when he learned how to make fire, the knife was a major tool in food preparation as well. Today, the knife remains as one of the most important tools you could have. The ubiquitous knife is used everywhere, from homes to restaurants to cruise ships.

But although we can all agree about the importance of this versatile tool, the fact remains that still a lot of people don’t know how to handle and take care of their knives properly. A friend once jokingly told me that perhaps it’s because knives don’t have instruction manuals.

One of my pet peeves is watching people use knives wrongly. But then, no one showed us how to use knives properly whe we were little. Our parents just told us that knives were dangerous and to keep away from them. Knives may not come with instruction manuals indeed, but I believe that people who use them regularly should at least take the effort to learn how to handle them correctly.

First, learn how to hold the knife properly. There are three basic ways to hold a knife, but it depends on the kind of knife and what is it going to be used for. For cutting against a board, the knife should be held with the blade between thumb and forefinger. Grip the handle with your other three fingers. When you want to cut hanging meat, for example, hold the knife in a dagger-like fashion to get proper leverage. When using a small knife to turn or peel, one or two fingers should grip the blade, with the othersthe rest around the handle.

Learn also how to care for your knives. A wooden board should be used for chopping and cutting. Plastic boards require more cleaning, and they are not quite as gentle on the edge of a knife as wooden boards. Get a board with the end-grain as a cutting surface, rather than side grain. Why? The end-grain is the least abrasive surface to cut against, so your knife’s edge will last a longer time.

Always store a knife in a way that protects the blade, such as a plastic sleeve or a paperboard. Clean a knife after using it, then dry and store. Never wash knives in a dishwasher, or just throw it in the wash basin. Always protect the knife’s edge against other hard surfaces. To properly sharpen a knife, the best way is to use a knife sharpener with an abrasive, diamond surface. Of course, you can always use a whetstone, but it takes a lot of experience to be able to sharpen a knife to razor-like sharpness with it.

The History of Pizza

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 2:10 am

It is not conclusive when precisely did pizza emerge at its position as one of the tremendously popular dishes in the United States, but nearly everybody will unquestionably concur that pizza has become America’s favorite food over the past 50 years. Millions of pizza pies are eaten daily, but very few people, if at all, stop munching and chewing their beloved pizza to consider the history of their favorite food. The true origins of this fine cuisine are as colorful as any excellent pizza piled with toppings.

If you go out into the streets and start asking people where they imagine pizza came from, chances are you will get answers pointing to the common belief that Italians created the pizza. Even so, pizza’s roots go back to the antediluvian times. Despite the fact that we have yet to uncover archeological evidence of a Dominos Pizza before the last century, it is known that the Babylonians, Israelites, Egyptians and other ancient Middle Eastern cultures were eating flat, un-leaven bread that had been cooked in mud ovens.

The bread was very much like a pita, which is still common in Greece and the Middle East today. Furthermore, it is known that ancient Mediterranean people such as the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks were eating the bread, topped flavored with olive oil and indigenous spices.

The lesser class populace of Naples, Italy is believed to have created pizza in a more familiar fashion. In the late 1800s, an Italian baker by the name of Raffaele Esposito, was considered to have produced such a dish for traveling royals. According to the story, the Italian monarch King Umberto and his consort, Queen Margherita were touring the area. In order to make an impression and to show his devoted zeal, Raffaele opted to include some toppings to his flat bread with food that would best symbolize the colors of Italy: red tomato, white mozzarella cheese and green basil. The monarch and queen were so fascinated by the creativity of the dish and its maker that news rapidly reached the people. The end results were that the dish was well received to the point that others began to reproduce it.

By the onset of the 1900s pizza made its way to the inner urban centres of the United States, thanks to Italian immigrants. The people of New York and Chicago were among the foremost diners to taste and enjoy their first slices of pizza, due to those cities having large Italian populations. Small cafes began offering the Italian favorite . American soldiers further prompted the dish to become very popular at the end of World War II , having been exposed to it while fighting on the Italian front.

Today pizza has become just as American as baseball and apple pie. Only because of its most current bloodlines is it regarded an Italian dish. Huge U. S. based multi-billion dollar companies which depend on the pizza for their earnings should be grateful for the evolution of this delicious dish, along with countless poor college students who can appreciate the fine dining experience that pizza has given them, even while on a budget.

Buying Jewelry Online

Filed under: Home Ideas — @ 2:10 am

Most people would not even think about browsing the Internet to buy jewelry. Perhaps it’s because they feel more comfortable visiting their local retailer rather than shopping for an expensive and valuable item from a virtual one. Or perhaps the unfamiliarity of doing business on the Internet with an unknown and unseen person scares them, thus preferring to do business with someone they can see and hear. Whatever reason it may be, the fact remains that the idea of buying jewelry online is still anathema for some people.

But times are changing fast, and traditional jewelers are beginning to set up shop in cyberspace. In fact, several jewelers have already established their reputations online, and more are following in their footsteps. It is now commonplace for most people to see high-quality jewelry being sold and purchased online, as opposed to a traditional jeweler’s store. This is good news for shoppers and retailers alike, since e-commerce has now provided a lot of benefits and convenience for merchants and shoppers alike.

For shop owners, doing business online means that their valuable items will be safe and secure. They won’t have to worry anymore about the customers improperly handling the items. They can also save a lot of money that would otherwise go into buying safes, vaults, display cases, etc.. It is less expensive to maintain and operate an online store, as compared to a traditional one; thus enabling the store to save operational costs.

For shoppers, convenience is the most common reason to transact business on the Internet. They will no longer have to walk or drive from one shop to another. Shoppers can even browse the items for as long as they want without an annoying attendant or shopkeeper following them around the store. And when they do decide to buy something, the whole process can be accomplished with only a few clicks, fast and easy. Some online jewelry stores sell their valuable items at much lower prices than local retailers. This is another major factor to consider when deciding where to buy.

Shoppers will also enjoy a wide variety of the finest jewelry collections available. Some online shops even feature exclusive items that customers will not find anywhere else, which makes online shopping even better than going to your local jeweler. Whether you need a tiara for your daughter, a ring for your dad, or an anklet for your fashionable and trendy teenager, you can find anything you want online. The selection is simply enormous. Bridal jewelry, celebrity jewelry, jewelry armoire, silver jewelry, and even plus-size jewelry, to name only a few, can all be found here.

Online jewelers like Irda Jewelry have established a reputation for quality and great service. If you still haven’t explored the possibilities of online shopping, then you haven’t enjoyed the faster service, the greater selection, and the convenience that others have. It’s very easy to find any item you want, and even easier to buy one. Try it out for yourself and experience the convenience and the practicality that online shopping has to offer.
